Dyson Captures Dunhill Links Title

Simon Dyson captured the Dunhill Links Championship on Monday after shooting a 6 under par final round of 66, finishing 3 shots ahead of Oliver Wilson and Rory McIlroy.

The 31 year old finished on 20 under par for the four rounds, winning a career best £485,850, and moves him into the world's top 50 players for the first time. Having already won the Dutch Open in August, Dyson moves to the top of Europe's Ryder Cup standings.

Luke Donald had led going into the final round, delayed after gale-force winds on Saturday, but he carded 73, ending a disappointing six shots back.

GB & Ireland Claim Vivendi Trophy

Great Britain and Ireland won their fifth successive Vivendi Trophy, losing the Sunday singles matches 6-4 but claiming the overall victory 16½-11½.

They only needed two points from the 10 singles matches, reduced to 1½ before play started when Anthony Wall withdrew with a shoulder injury. Rory McIlroy beat Henrik Stenson on the final green, and with Graeme McDowell scoring a 3&2 victory over Robert Karlsson, the win was complete.

Star of the final day was Anders Hansen, who was an incredible 10 under par for the 12 holes it took him to demolish Nick Dougherty - three under himself - by a 7&6 margin, the biggest in the event's history.

Great Britain and Ireland have been hit hard with Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter all pulling out of the Vivendi Trophy. Also missing is Luke Donald and Justin Rose.

Continental Europe also have withdrawals, with Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer pulling out through injury.

Despite eight high-profile names not showing up for a variety of reasons, 18 of the 20 players on show are in the world's top 100.

Europe's Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie will be present to keep a close eye on players who may be on the fringes of his squad for next year.

Cabrera Bello Equals Record To Win Austrian Open

Rafael Cabrera Bello shot a European Tour record-equalling 60 to claim the Austrian Open title. 8 shots behind overnight leader Benn Barham, the Spaniard even had a eagle chance on the final green, albeit a long 30 yard attempt for a 59. Barham finished one shot behind.

Although this was Cabrera Bello's first European Tour win, this was the 14th time a 60 was scored, but the first time that this score was shot on the final round to win.

Vivendi Trophy Teams Announced

This month's Vivendi Trophy teams have been announced. Paul McGinley will captain a Britain and Ireland team against Thomas Bjorn's Continental team at St Nom la Breteche, beginning on September 24th.

However, there are question marks over some players in both teams. Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey and Ian Poulter are all attempting to qualify for the Tour Championshipin the States, which is the same week, as is Sergio Garcia. Martin Kaymer and Robert Karlsson are both recovering from injury.

Seve Ballesteros had hoped to be present for the tournament that used to bear his name, but his treatment for his brain tumour is still ongoing and he may miss the event.

Noren In Maiden European Win

Sweden's Alex Noren claimed his first title winning the European Masters in Switzerland, the first event that qualifies for next year's Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor. Noren fired a final-round 66 to secure the title by two strokes from Welshman Bradley Dredge, who carded a 65. England's Ross McGowan was a further shot behind in third place.

Rory McIlroy fired eight birdies and an eagle in a final-round 64, the best score of the final day. This gave him a share of seventh place, after finishing runner up last year.

Noren went into the final round with a two-shot lead after carding a round of 63 on Saturday. Dredge applied pressure with consistent birdies but an eagle for Noren when he chipped in from a bunker moved him to 20 under par.

But par on the remaining three holes for both players meant it was Noren who won the title.

Top Spot For McIlroy?

Rory McIlroy has the chance to lead the European Tour rankings for the first time this week. If he wins at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland the 20-year-old will rise above Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey.

Kaymer had surgery last week after breaking a foot whilst go-karting and will be out for the month. Casey returns from a rib muscle problem, but plays in Boston instead.

Parnevik Out For Season After Surgery

Jesper Parnevik has been ruled out of the rest of this season after undergoing hip surgery. He also underwent hip surgery nine years ago, by the same surgeon, Dr Marc Philippon. With this past experience Parnevik, 44, hopes to be able to recuperate quickly.

Dyson Wins Three Way Play Off

England's Simon Dyson won a three-way play-off against Ireland's Peter Lawrie and Sweden's Peter Hedblom to win the KLM Open in the Netherlands.

Dyson shot a course record-equalling 63, to finish on 15 under par, before Lawrie carded 67 to set up the play-off, and overnight leader Hedblom joined them after shooting 69.

Dyson needed just one play-off hole to earn the £257,000 winners cheque; it was the 31-year-old's first title since he won the same event in 2006.

Fourth and fifth places went to Damien McGrane and Darren Clarke.

Both Lawrie and Hedblom had chances to win before the play off. Lawrie was one ahead of Dyson with three to play, but bogeyed the 16th. Hedblom hit the flag with his tee shot on the 17th and stopped two feet away. He then had a 25-foot putt opportunity to win on the last, but pushed it wide.

With Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie also winning early on it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

Yang Overhauls Woods For USPGA Win

Yang Yong-Eun became the first Asian-born male winner of a major championship when he beat Tiger Woods to clinch the USPGA title at Hazeltine.

The 37-year-old South Korean was two shots behind Woods after 3 rounds but shot a final round 70 to Woods' 75 to win by three.

This was teh first time in a major that Woods has lost after leading entering the final day's play.

England's Lee Westwood and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy tied for third on 3 under par, with US Open champion Lucas Glover a further shot behind.

Defending champion Padraig Harrington, level with Yang at the start, scored 8 on the par 3 8th, which put him out of contention.

Woods was chasing his 15th major title but failed to hole putts when they really mattered and was unable to pull clear.

Yang, who was ranked 110th in the world before the event, claimed his single PGA Tour victory at the Honda Classic at Riviera earlier this year, but was best known for holding off Woods at the HSBC Champions event in China three years ago.

The PING Junior Solheim Cup kicks off today at Aurora Country Club. The PING Junior Solheim Cup follows the same format as The Solheim Cup and features the top 12 U.S. players versus their European counterparts. It is only girls' team event of its kind at the junior level.

The United States won the inaugural event in 2002, while the European side evened the series in Sweden in 2003. The USA regained the PING Junior Solheim Cup in 2005, only for the Europeans to continue the trend of the Cup being won by the team on its home soil by taking victory in Sweden in 2007.

Harrington Finds Form

Padraig Harrington hit a bogey-free round of 64 in the first round of the World Golf Championships in Ohio to lead by 2 shots. He leads Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng, American Scott Verplank and South African Tim Clark by 2 shots.

But Paul Casey, world number 3, was forced to pull out after six holes with a rib injury, which occurred before The Open.

Ian Poulter is a further shot behind, along with Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker. Six players are 4 shots behind Harrington, including Tiger woods, Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

2013 Solheim Cup

Colorado Golf Club has been selected as the site of the 2013 Solheim Cup, as announced by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

This will be the 13th staging of the event, which was started by Karsten and Louise Solheim, founders of PING and Karsten Manufacturing Corporation; PING has sponsored The Solheim Cup since its inception in 1990.

Colorado Golf Club, located in Parker, Colorado, is also home to the 2010 Senior PGA Championship. Opened in 2007, Colorado Golf Club was designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.

GOLF Magazine and Sports Illustrated named Colorado Golf Club the top new private course in America in 2007. The golf course debuted at 23rd on Golfweek’s list of Top 100 Modern courses in 2009.

Woods In Buick Open Victory

Tiger Woods put the disappointment of missing the cut at The Open behind him by winning the Buick Open at Warwick Hills, proving that whilst form is temporary, class is permanent.

Starting the last round 1 shot clear, he birdied three holes and parred the remainder for a 69, 3 shots ahead of John Senden and Greg Chalmers, both from Australia, and Roland Thatcher on 17 under par.

Thatcher grabbed the final day headlines, shooting 8 birdies in a round of 64, but was too far back to catch Woods.

Woods' 69th on the PGA Tour never looked in doubt after birdies at the fourth and seventh holes. Only Sam Snead (82) and Jack Nicklaus (73) have won more events on the PGA Tour.

Matthew Returns With First Major Win

Catriona Matthew became the first Scottish winner of a women's Major when she held on to win the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes yesterday.

Having returned last week after the birth of Sophie, her second daughter, and escaped from a fire that burned her husbands feet recently, Matthew was delighted to record the biggest win of her career.

Starting the final round 3 shots ahead of Christina Kim, she dropped shots at the 1st, 5th and 10th holes. However three consecutive birdies on 13, 14 and 15, the last a peach of a long putt, gave her a 3 shot win ahead of seven-time Major champion, Karrie Webb, on three under par 285.

Kim finished in a tie for third with America's Paula Creamer, Japan’s Ai Miyazato and South Korea’s Hee-Won Han on one over par 289.

“I can’t quite believe it,” said Matthew after collecting the £197,059 first prize. “I was definitely nervous this morning and it was a pretty shaky start. I can’t begin to put into words what I feel like right now,” she added. “Two weeks ago, when I came back (after giving birth to Sophie), I was really just hoping to make two cuts.”

The Open Championship - First Day

In good conditions the headlines were made by two veterans of the game, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez and Tom Watson.

Jiminez sunk a 65ft birdie putt at the last to take a one-shot lead on 6 under par 64. He leads Watson, 2003 winner Ben Curtis and Japan's Kenichi Kuboya by 1 shot, after Watson, 59, had grabbed all the early headlines.

Watson won here back in 1977, and had he finished ahead, would have been the oldest leader in a Major after the opening round. But Jiminez's monster putt stole the limelight.

Lee Westwood, Paul Casey, Anthony Wall, Graeme McDowell and David Howell lead the British challenge on two under, with defending champ Padraig Harrington, aiming for a hat-trick of titles, poised at 1 under par.

Tiger Woods had a frustrating day, and finished on 1 over par, but looked out of sorts.

The weather is all set to get worse though, so the next three days could be interesting.

Who Will Win The 138th Open Championship?

As play tees off this morning at Turnberry we ask who will win The Open?

Favourite, not surprisingly, is Tiger Woods. Since coming back from injury he has been getting better and better, with two 6th places this season in Majors. Having won the AT&T National last week, who would bet against him?

Could Padraig Harrington complete a hat-trick of wins after his 2007 and 2008 victories? It would be a good story, but history tells us an unlikely one, as no-one has achieved this in over 50 years.

Perhaps fellow Irishman Rory McIlroy? Although just 20 he could well be a contender, as he is obviously a talented golfer. McIlroy finished 20th on his Masters debut in April and 10th in the US Open, could he continue that improvement and challenge?

Another man like Harrington who is aiming for a hat-tick is German Martin Kaymer. He has won in France and Scotland in the last two weeks, so is obviously a man in form.

Probably the best British challenge will come from Lee Westwood, who has challenged Kaymer in both the last two weeks, losing the French Open on a play off. Of course Paul Casey should feature highly, he is after all world number 3? It would be great to see a British winner - it's 10 years since Paul Lawrie won the Open, and no other British winners of Majors since has been too long.

Which other Europeans may challenge? Well, I wouldn't back him myself, but can Sergio Garcia continue the Spanish sporting success?

And how about Greg Norman? He surprised many by taking a two shot lead into the final day last year, finally finishing third. Can he do as well this year? It may take some windy weather for him to compete, but this is Scotland, so that's not unlikely.

Whoever wins the Claret Jug and £750,000 first prize come Sunday, I'm sure we are all looking forward to four days of great play ahead at Turnberry.

Martin Kaymer repeated his success in Paris by claiming the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond yesterday.

This second Tour win in 8 days not only gives him more than £1 million for the two events but pushes him into second place behind Paul Casey on the European money list.

Kaymer beat overnight leader Gonzalez Fernandez-Castano of Spain and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin by two shots on 15 under par, after shooting a final round 69.

The German, who won the European Tour Rookie of the Year in 2007, became the first player since Ian Woosnam in 1990 to win the two European Tour events before the Open, which starts Thursday. But will he make it three in a row with Open Success at Turnberry this week?

Everyone asks me about the third win in a row," said Kaymer. "We are playing a major next week. And the field is going to be the best we have all year long.

"After last week and this week, I feel really good, my game is solid, so hopefully, I can keep it up."

Immelman pulls out of Open

Former Masters champion Trevor Immelman has withdrawn from next week's Open because of a wrist problem which occurred at the Memorial a month ago.

"My wrist has been responding well to treatment, but at this point, it just isn't far enough along to allow me to be ready for the Open," he said.

Swede Robert Karlsson is also out of the major because of an eye problem which has affected his vision and balance.

New Zealander Tim Wilkinson, who came through qualifying in America, has also withdrawn following surgery on his thumb.

Kaymer Wins French Open Play-Off

German Martin Kaymer held his nerve to win the French Open in a play-off with Lee Westwood.

The Englishman had produced a final-round 65 to take the clubhouse lead on 13 under par, but Kaymer managed to par his last 3 holes for his play-off chance.

Kaymer's second shot at the first extra hole, the 18th, just missed landing in water, however Westwood found the water, which gave the German advantage. He duly sunk a long putt to claim the title.

"Martin's ball has carried the water by a foot and mine must have went in by a foot. That's the chance you take in play-offs," said Westwood.

"You can't judge the week by that and I certainly can't be disappointed by anything after the way I played today.

Kaymer had birdie chances at the 16th and 17th, but failed to take them, before winning.

Ian Poulter claimed third on 10 under, with Scandinavians Hansen of Denmark and Hanson of Sweden a further shot behind.

Overnight leader Rafa Echenique, of Argentina, had a nightmare round as he twice found the water, his round of 77 saw him plunge down the leaderboard and finish on five under.

Argentinian Rafa Echenique finished second in Munich last week, and has carried that form into the French Open, where, after three rounds, he holds a 1 shot lead over German Martin Kaymer.

Echenique shot a 70 to finish on 11 under. A shot behind Kaymer is Englishman Paul Waring.

Colin Montgomerie turned back the years to card 65, but after a poor round Friday he may find his 5 under par too far to make up.

Dougherty Claims BMW International Open

Britain's Nick Dougherty carded an 8 under par final round of 64 to claim the BMW International Open in Munich yesterday, with a four round score of 22 under par.

Dougherty started with four birdies in the opening five holes, pulling level with overnight leader Retief Goosen, who had lead from the opening round.

Birdies on 13, 14 and 15 gave Dougherty a comfortable lead, but an albatross at the last hole from Rafa Echenique gave him a European Tour record 27 on the back nine, and second place with 21 under. Goosen finished third on 18 under par.

This was Dougherty's third win on Tour, although having bogied the 18th on Saturday he was pleased to hold his nerve for par.

Glover Claims Maiden Major Victory

American Lucas Glover entered the final day's play level at the lead and held on for victory despite some late challenges.

Glover started the day on 7 under and at times shared the lead today with Phil Mickelson. Despite dropping 3 shots, Glover held on to win by 2 shots ahead of Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes on 2 under par.

The 29 year old turned pro in 2004 and had only one tour victory prior to today in 2005. Despite this, he is a solid performer and was ranked 71 in the world prior to the event.

Mickelson, roared on by the New York crowd, finished runner up for the fith time. Despite his obvious disappointment at still not claiming the bigprize, he will be aware that this shadows in comparison as he supports his wife Amy as she starts her treatment for breast cancer.

2001 Open Champion David Duval was disappointed with a tie for second. Despite having dropped down since that victory to 882 in the world he felt he could win again.

Barnes set a new US Open 36-hole scoring record of 132, but he struggled with his game for much of the day on the final day and carded a 76.

Ross Fisher was closest in becoming the first Briton to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970. At the 13th he struck an eagle to put him one behind, but further bogeys left him on 1 under par for the event.

The 109th US Open will be remembered for the torrential rain that hampered play, but Bethpage Black belonged to Lucas Glover today.

Third Round US Open

We had expected a new champion yesterday, but torrential rain on Thursday and Saturday have forced the US Open into Monday play for the first time since 1983. The forecast at Bethpage Black is good for a finish today though.

Leading the way is Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover, both if the United States. They lead Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Hunter Mahan and England's Ross Fisher by 5 shots after the opening holes of the fourth round were started on Sunday.

Mike Weir is a further shot behind at 1 under par.

Play Suspended At Bethpage Black

Play was suspended early yesterday with half of the 156 competitors in the US Open still not out on the course.

Torrential rain won the day, with greens soon flooding. Despite valiant efforts by the course officials, play was called off and players will resume again today. Fingers crossed for some better weather so we can see a great competition.

Who Will Win The US Open?

The Us Open teed off just minutes ago with Rickie Fowler, Casey Wittenberg and Bo van Pelt first off at Bethpage.

Tiger Woods is a big favourite to win the event, and he is amongst the early starters. He will be extremely keen to retain his title, unsurprisingly, which he won last year playing on virtually one leg. And of course he won on this course in 2002, so happy memories indeed. What a line up he has with Padraig Harrington and Angel Cabrera - certainly the pick of the first round tee offs.

There can't be any neautral who wouldn't want Phil Mickelson to win his first US Open title. After 3 weeks off after the announcement of his wife Amy's breast cancer, Mickelson returned last week. He will play here then take more time whilst Amy has treatment. And of course he turned 39 last week and is a big favourite of the New York crowd. But surely this is not the time, or will it be a true fairy tale? Let's hope there is an even bigger happy ending in the months to come.

Can any of the European challengers end 39 years of wait to emulate Tony Jacklin in 1970? Of these I expect the best challenge to come from Paul Casey, who has won 3 times this season, Henrik Stenson, although he will have to find some form, and perhaps Sergio Garcia, who will find the long course suits him. For an outside bet try Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen or Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.

Wait, forget Kjeldsen, he's pulled out with an ear infection...

We will watch with anticipation over the next 4 days.

Varying Your Practice

When practicing to rid yourself of a fault, it is obviously important to practice that same shot time and time again. However, I see many golfers not varying their practice at all - they just play the same shot over and over.

Obviously the more you practice a shot the more likely it will be ingrained and you will virtually do it on auto pilot when you need to on the course. Variety in your practice though will make you a better all round player.

The more varied practice sessions will enable you to master more techniques and shots, which will give you a greater chance of success come competition day.

WHilst practicing, observe results you obtain from using different techniques or different clubs. Try adding spin to the ball and see how this affects the flight and what happens to the ball once it lands. And don't forget to vary the balls you use as each ball is designed to improve a certain aspect of the game.

Also, once you are happy with your basics, test out different clubs. As you get more confident and successful you will want to upgrade your equipment. Rather than sticking with the basic set you started with as a beginner, don't be afraid to upgrade and see what a better set of clubs will do for your game.

Faldo Knighted In Queen's Birthday Honours List

Nick Faldo has received a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for services to golf.

Faldo, 51, joins Sir Henry Cotton as the only other golfer to be knighted. The six-time major winner is the most successful British golfer in the modern era with 30 wins on the European Tour.

Between 1987 and 1996 Faldo won more majors than any other player in the world - his first Open victory coming at Muirfield.

Having win the 1989 Masters, he defended his title a year later, both by winning play offs. Just a few months after this he won the Open at St Andrews. His third Open victory came in 1992.

In 1996 he trailed Greg Norman by six strokes heading into the final round, but a 67 from him and a 78 from Norman gave him a 5 shot victory.

After 11 appearances in the Ryder Cup he captained the team last year, although defeated by the US.

Gay Storms To Victory In St Jude Classic

Brian Gay led each of the first three rounds of the St Jude Classic in Memphis by just a single shot.

It looked like he may be pipped after such a good start, but Gay responded by shooting his third 66 on the final round and winning by 5 shots at 18 under par.

The damage to the rest of the field was done early, with Gay hitting birdies on three of the first six holes to give himself some breathing space.

Bryce Molder and David Toms tied for second on 13 under par.

Gay has now qualified for this week's US Open Championship as a two time tournament winner this year.

Mickelson Returns To PGA Tour

It was always going to be an emotional time for Phil Mickelson when he returned to golf, after discovering his wife of 13 years Amy had been diagnosed with cancer.

Mickelson made is return at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis last week. Speaking before the event to a packed press conference he said he was looking to a 4 or 5 hour mental break, where he could think of something else.

At the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial the PGA Tour Wives Association organized a "Pink Out". Many players also took part.

Amy didn't travel to Memphis, and won't be at the US Open this week either. She will be surrounded by friends whilst her husband concentrates, if at all possible, on the Bethpage course.

After that a holiday will be on the cards before treatment starts. Mickelson will be back playing after that - but it will be quite some time later. And we are all reminded that golf can go on the back burner when family should come first.

Ten In Final Qualifying For Open

Sunningdale hosted the final qualifying for July's Open at Turnberry.

England's Graeme Storm and Argentine Rafa Echenique led the way shooting 10 under par for the two rounds. Storm shot 8 under par for the first round, a record for the New Course.

At nine under par David Drysdale finished joint third with fellow Scot Gary Orr and South African Branden Grace. Drysdale will make his major championship debut, although 17 years ago he played as a marker for Roger Chapman and John Daly.

Welshman Rhys Davies, England's Paul Broadhurst and Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin were joint sixth to qualify, which left 6 players battling it out in the play off for the last 2 places. Scot Richie Ramsay and Englishman Oliver Fisher were the successful ones.

England's Mark Foster and Danny Willett, Irishman Peter Lawrie and Dutchman Taco Remkes were the unlucky losers, but were joined by big names Thomas Bjorn and Thomas Levet, both former Open runners up, in missing out.

Other players that failed to make the mark included Shane Lowry, France's Christian Cevaer, and Swede Niclas Fasth.

Woods Claims 67th PGA Tour Victory

Tiger Woods had a storming last round at the Memorial Tournament to claim his 67th PGA Tour victory.

He pipped fellow American Jim Furyk by a single shot with a last round 7 under par 65 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. Joanathan Byrd and Mark Wilson tied for third, 4 shots of the lead. Byrd had held a 2 shot lead with 6 holes to play, but was overtaken by Woods and Furyk in the latter stages.

Woods driving was immaculate in the final round, where he hit all 14 fairways yesterday. "The driving this week was nice," he said. "It was coming. It was just a matter of time. I finally put it together this week."

The 26 year old carded a 4 under par 67 for the final round and the £300,000 first prize in the Welsh Open, his first top-10 finish on the tour in 45 attempts.

Starting the day as joint leader with England's Nick Dougherty and Spaniard Ignacio Garrido, he held his nerve and played well to beat Niclas Fasth by one shot. Garrido finished third but Dougherty had a nightmare 79, 8 over par, in the final round.

Huildahl later said "I knew I was doing well, but I didn't know how well until I asked my caddie on the 18th tee."

"He told me I needed a par - and it's nice to have a par five and have a chance to lay up. But I couldn't put winning out of my head and it was quite emotional."

Torrential Summer Rain Delays Welsh Open

The third round of the Welsh Open was delayed today after 35mm of rain during the night.

With the course waterlogged the start of play was delayed until after a 13:00 inspection.

Bunkers became washed out by the downpour and there was also flooding on fairways.

After a 6 hour delay 3 players found themselves tied for the lead at the end of play on 5 under par - Ignacio Garrido of Spain, Nick Dougherty of England and Jeppe Huldahl of Denmark.

There were few scores below par, with Dougherty regaining his first day form after a poor second day. He picked up 3 birdies and an eagle on the closing 9 holes.

However a few players are yet to complete their third round after the late start, icluding Scottish rookie Richie Ramsay, the overnight leader. He finished at 9pm with two holes still to play and 1 shot behind the clubhouse leaders.

England's Luke Donald held a three stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, shooting an 8-under par 64.

Pavin Takes Early Look at Ryder Cup Venue

Corey Pavin is getting an early look at next year's Ryder Cup venue this week as he plays in the Welsh Open at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newbury.

The 49 year old will lead his American team out next year, but doubts whether he will be able to bring his players as a team for a taster prior to the event, as his 4 picks will be made just a couple of weeks beforehand. However, he is advising them to take a look when they are playing in Britain, whether it be before a tournament or on the way home.

Scottish Clubs In Ground-Breaking Arrangement

Turnerhouse golf club in Edinburgh have teamed up with Helensburgh, Stranraer and Craigie Hill to offer it's members free golf in a special arrangement.

With the credit crunch hitting all clubs then this is one way of attracting players back to the sport.

"We have got to look outside the box in these difficult times for golf clubs and we believe this arrangement is worth giving a try," said Turnhouse secretary Dougie Cleeton.

Under the terms of the agreement, which tees off on Monday, Turnhouse members will get to play for free at the three other courses, with only minor terms and conditions in place.

"Turnhouse came up with this idea, which has been in the pipeline for the best part of three months," added Cleeton.

"We contacted Craigie Hill to test the water with them and, after learning they were acceptable to it, we then got in touch with Stranraer and Helensburgh as well.

"Clubs all over the country are doing an awful lot at the moment to try and entice new members but this arrangement is looking at the wider picture.

"We all have to try and retain the members we have as clubs are competing against each other and we see this as an added bonus for our members."

Turnhouse members are excited by the new scheme, with many aiming to take advantage over the coming weeks.

"The days of people joining a golf club for life are gone as there are not many waiting lists now," he said. "That means we've got to make it attractive as possible to be a golf club member and we believe this idea could be a winner for the clubs involved."

This ground-breaking initiative starts on Monday.

When taking up the sport, most beginners try to hit the ball as far as they can. Many golfers continue with this mindset, yet they never achieve the distances that they would like or are capable of.

The clever golfer will practice until he gets his accuracy consistent and then concentrate on furthering the distance.

It's pointless hitting the ball further than others if the ball ends up in the rough, or even worse on another fairway. This only makes the following shots more tricky.

A drive down the middle of the fairway, albeit shorter than your playing partner, will set you up for a better approach shot and a lower round score.

By using more controlled swings, you gain accuracy sooner and will progress to the longer distances faster. Learn correct techniques that will hold you in good steed for the rest of your playing career and benefit from lower scores and lower handicaps.

Start with smaller swings and it is easier to train your body to develop the correct actions, and these actions will always be in use when you progress to the longer drives.

Once you’ve mastered your swing, progress to a full swing with confidence knowing that you will have the control to hit the ball in the right direction.

Correct action and a full swing will ensure you hit the ball further than would be possible if you had only aimed for the big shots from the start of your learning.

If you find your drives going wayward, go back to basics and aim for smaller swings until the correct action is consistently being taken.

A Simple But Unique Putting Tip

Here's a simple technique to improve your putting.
Before you can expect to putt well on greens with a slope, you need to learn to putt well on the flat. This exercise will teach you to swing your putter through a straight line, and hit the ball squarely on the face of the putter.

You need to get a putter that has a line on it that you can see clearly, as this will be the line that you will follow through to the middle of the ball.

On the practice green, (preferably one that you have at home, as this technique might not be appreciated), mark straight lines with a builders chalk line in several directions from the centre of the hole, spanning out around the green.

Getting someone to hold the chalk line in the middle of the cup will make the process easier. Move around the green flicking the line to leave chalk marks along the ground.

Then place your golf ball on the line, leaving some of the line on the ground behind the ball visible. This helps to guide your swing. You will then be able to swing your putter using the line on the ground as a guide, and the line on the putter itself to connect with the middle of the ball.

In a short time you should find that you are managing to putt from a relatively good distance and get the ball in the hole most of the time.

This will help you to develop the correct posture and consistency to putt well.

After a while, move the ball off the line and imagine there is still a line on the ground by visualizing it, looking from the ball to the cup and back again several times.

Line up your putter as before and look at the line on your putter to hit the centre of the ball with this spot on your club.

You are now re-training yourself to see an invisible line from the ball to the cup that you can use on any green you play on.

11 Year Old Beats Odds To Become Golf Champion

An 11-year-old boy who was told he might never walk properly or play sports, has beaten the odds by becoming a junior golf champion.

Brandon Craggs was diagnosed with cerebral palsy after being born five weeks early.

He grew up wearing orthopedic boots and doctors told his parents he would always be too clumsy to participate in sports.

But Brandon has proved them wrong by winning the Wolverhampton Schools Championship at Penn Golf Club – beating competitors five years his senior.

He learned the game after following his Dad, slowly, round courses.

After years of physical therapy, Brandon he can now walk without problems and plays the links every weekend with his dad.

Kanemoto Claims First Career Title

Takashi Kanemoto, 38, edged out Australia's Brendan Jones at the third play-off hole to claim a first career title in the Mitsubishi Diamond Cup at Oarai Golf Club.

Kanemoto carded a final-round five-under-par 67 to join overnight leader Jones at the top of the leaderboard on five under after the Australian signed for a 69.

Jones, 34, had looked comfortable for a ninth Japan Tour crown, after leading by three strokes with eight holes to play. But while he parred his way home, Kanemoto finished strongly, picking up birdies at 12, 15 and 16 to secure his play-off place.

After both players parred the first two extra holes, Kanemoto picked up a birdie at the third to claim the victory.

Defending champion Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand finished two adrift in third after a final-round four-under-par 68, with Hiroshi Iwata (67), Taichi Teshima (67) and Kaname Yokoo (68) a further shot back tied for fourth.

Surprise Winner Of European Open

Christian Cévaër, the World Number 449, overcame a star-studded field to win The European Open in Kent.

The Frenchman, who uses a TaylorMade R9 driver, TaylorMade rescue wood and TaylorMade Monza spider putter, had only won one previous tournament on the European Tour, back in 2004 when he won the Open de España.

The 39 year old beat England's Steve Webster, Scot Gary Orr and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros by a single shot.

He played the front nine in 39 and did not have a birdie until the long 15th, but three closing pars were good enough to give him the €341,220 first prize - easily the biggest of his 16 year professional career.

At 196th on The Race to Dubai entering the week he now has a five year European Tour exemption.

The victory will also lift Cévaër more than 300 places in the world.

Calmels wins Telenet Trophy

Frenchman François Calmels clinched his maiden European Challenge Tour victory by two strokes in the Telenet Trophy.

The 27 year old Parisian birdied the final two holes for a round of 70, having been locked in a tie at the top of the leaderboard for much of the final round, first with Stuart Manley, then with Carlos Rodiles and Sam Walker.

Rodiles had set the clubhouse target of ten under par after a course record 65 on La Marache Course and his 278 total was matched by Walker who posted a 66.

Calmels birdied the 15th to seize the outright lead but surrendered it with a bogey on the 16th, before a superb bunker shot on the 17th swung the advantage his way once again. Another bunker shot to within three feet for birdie on the last, to finish on 12 under par 276, was good enough to seal the €24,000 first prize to move to fourth on the Challenge Tour Rankings.

“I’m very happy and this means a lot to me,” said Calmels. “The victory means a lot as it improves my ranking and means I get into events like Saint Omer. It was very hard out there today. I said I didn’t want to make any mistakes and I only made two bogeys.

“I putted really well today to save some pars and the eight footer on the 17th for birdie was very important. I knew on the last that if I made par I would win unless Stuart (Manley) birdied it so I was delighted when my sand shot landed a couple of feet from the hole.

Rodiles and Walker finished tied for second place, while Ireland’s Simon Thorton and Chile’s Mark Tullo shared fourth place on nine under. Manley eventually tied sixth after a bogey on the last hole.

Putting Tips

How often have you been so close to sinking a putt only to come up short?

Or perhaps you only just missed and see your ball go sailing past the hole making the return putt that much more difficult.

Many games are lost on the putting green and in most cases it is due to the wrong distance, rather than the direction of the ball.

Most beginners quickly get a feel for the direction the ball will travel, even when the greens are sloping. You've probably seen it yourself when a beginner putts the ball within inches of the hole on a sloping green time and time again.

What you don't see quite so often is the ball stopping a few inches past the hole when they miss.

There are many factors that affect the distance a ball will travel on the green, from the slope, to the preparation of the green and the weather conditions that make it wet and slow or dry and fast. It can make a huge difference with greens getting faster as they dry off in the afternoon sun, or if it starts raining then becoming slower.

Reading the distance of a putt is paramount to get your ball to drop in that hole.

Once again it all comes back to practice, and the best practice is on the day of the tournament, in the conditions that you will be playing in. If possible find time to have a few practice putts before you start play to 'dial in' your distance.

One thing to always remember; the ball will never drop if it doesn't reach the hole.
It may be obvious, but more often that not putts will come up short. Always aim for the back of the cup so that, provided you have your direction right, you are going to have a chance of making the putt.

Staying On Balance

Golf is all about balance.
You don't only need to get the right balance on your feet, but also in the movement of your body, when you swing the clubs and so on.

Balance goes further than just the body however.
You need a balanced approach in your mind to play the game well.

You need to stay focussed on the shot you are playing rather than remembering the last hole.

Our balance should flow through with the movement of the swing in one fluid action to the striking of the ball and even after the ball has been hit, with a balanced follow through.

It is a natural feeling that will become effortless with practice.

It is through finding balance in your mind and body that you will start improving and consistently hitting good shots. Without this it will be very difficult to find any consistency in your game.

Once your upper body is correctly positioned behind the ball, you will find that you naturally place more weight on the back foot.

Try it next time you have a practice swing. Stand balanced on your feet with equal pressure on the front and back of the foot. Place yourself behind the ball and gently swing through without making any effort to concentrate on the distribution of the weight on you feet.

You will find that this will come naturally with no effort at all and that is precisely how you should feel when you are striking the ball.
